Colony Woodstock Wedding

Woodstock, NY

If you’re planning a wedding at Colony in Woodstock, chances are you’re not looking for a barn, a ballroom, or anything that feels traditional or expected. Colony is different - and that’s exactly what makes it so special.

Located right in the heart of Woodstock, Colony is first and foremost a live music venue, and that energy carries through everything about a wedding day here. It feels less like a formal event and more like a really meaningful celebration - the kind where guests are fully present, the dance floor stays packed, and the day feels like a true reflection of the couple.

What Makes Colony Woodstock Such a Unique Wedding Venue

Colony stands out immediately because it doesn’t fit into a typical wedding venue category. It’s not trying to be timeless or classic - it has a strong sense of personality, history, and character.

The space feels a little looser, a little cooler, and much less stuffy than traditional venues. There’s a vintage music vibe throughout the interior, from the stage to the lighting, and it creates an experience that feels fun and immersive for guests. For couples who love live music, creativity, or hosting a true party, Colony feels incredibly personal.

This venue is especially well-suited for:

  • musicians or music lovers
  • couples who want their wedding to feel like them
  • anyone looking for something memorable and different for their guests

Outdoor & Indoor Ceremony Options at Colony Woodstock

One of the things couples really appreciate about getting married at Colony Woodstock is the flexibility when it comes to ceremony locations. Ceremonies can take place either outdoors or indoors, and both options feel intentional and beautiful in very different ways.

During indoor ceremonies, couples can choose to stand on the stage or on Colony's grand staircase.

Outdoor ceremonies at colony take place right next door in front of their beautiful Teahouse (where you can also spend the morning getting ready). The ceremony framed by the architecture of the house makes for some really beautiful and unique ceremony photos, and it's very convenient for guests, as it's right outside Colony.

What I Love About Photographing a Colony Woodstock Wedding

From a photography standpoint, Colony is anything but plain. The venue itself brings so much visual interest that it hardly needs additional decor - the character is already built in.

One of my favorite things is the mix of string lights, colored lights, and stage lighting throughout the space. It creates layers and depth that make photos feel dynamic and full of energy. The second-story balcony is another standout feature - it allows for unique overhead shots of the couple and their guests that you just can’t get at most venues.

Because the space is so stylized and immersive, people really feel it when they’re there. That energy translates directly into candid photos - guests are relaxed, in the moment, and fully engaged, which makes for some of my favorite images of the night.

Lighting, Atmosphere, and the Overall Feel in Photos

The light at Colony is dramatic, warm, and cozy, with a definite concert-like feel. It’s not bright and airy - and that’s a good thing. The lighting is part of what gives the space so much personality.

Photographing a venue like this really benefits from a photographer who embraces that atmosphere instead of fighting it. Some moments photograph beautifully using only the existing ambient light, while others shine when flash is used to freeze movement and capture the energy of the dance floor. Both approaches create different moods, and having someone comfortable working with both allows the final gallery to feel true to the space and the night.

The result is a set of images that feel rich, lively, and full of movement - very much in line with the experience of being there.

What a Wedding Day at Colony Woodstock Feels Like

One of the things that stood out to me most while photographing here was how intimate and personal the day felt. In this case, the groom was a musician and actually got on stage to play with his band during the reception, which made the celebration feel like a true extension of who they are.

For guests, the reception space is a real wow moment. Walking in to see the venue lit with candles, colored lights, and stage lighting is unexpected in the best way. Because it feels more like a concert or party than a formal reception, guests naturally gravitate to the dance floor - and they tend to stay there.

The overall vibe is high-energy, warm, and communal, which makes it incredibly fun to photograph.

Helpful Things to Know When Planning a Colony Woodstock Wedding

Even without getting overly technical, there are a few things couples tend to appreciate about this venue:

  • Weather flexibility: Ceremonies can take place indoors or outdoors, and both spaces are beautiful. There are also plenty of interesting indoor spots for portraits, so weather is never a major stressor.

  • Music setup: As a live music venue, Colony is more than equipped for bands and DJs. The stage allows musicians to spread out comfortably, and no one has to worry about the sound setup.

  • Guest flow: Guests are typically seated on the main floor for dinner, which is later converted into a dance floor. Removing some seating helps shift the energy and encourages guests to really engage with the party.

  • Multiple levels: There’s still plenty of seating downstairs, plus additional seating upstairs for guests who want to chat or watch the dance floor from above.

  • Food: Colony is also a restaurant, so the kitchen is experienced and the food is great.

  • Smooth timelines: Whether the ceremony happens indoors or outside on the lawn, the day flows naturally and feels easy for guests.

Getting Ready & Nearby Locations

For this wedding, Suze and Eugene chose to get ready at the Beekman Arms Delamater Inn, which is a beautiful, historic space. While it’s about 30 minutes from Colony (something to keep in mind for timeline planning), it’s a great example of the kind of charming accommodations available in the Catskills and surrounding Woodstock area.
